Invited by the Graduate Institute of Journalism of National Taiwan University and the College of Communication of National Chengchi University, five students who took the Data Journalism course represented our department to visit Taiwan from April 26 to April 28 in 2017.
Data news has become one of the hot topics of the journalism industry and received more and more attention by journalism schools worldwide. Education of this emerging field requires interdisciplinary knowledge such as journalism and communication, computer science, statistics and visual design.
The National Institute of Journalism at National Taiwan University (NTU) began teaching data news four years ago. NTU invited the senior editor of the New York Times to provide students with professional guidance on data visualization. Meanwhile, National Chengchi University also encourages students to do their data news by cross-disciplinary departments.
Our department also provides elective courses on data journalism for undergraduate students. At the same time, through the various activities of the Data & News Society, we build multidisciplinary platforms, invite experts, data journalists and editors to the school, and provide guidance and sharing for students who are interested in data news reporting.
This visit was led by our Associate Professor Dr. Roselyn Du and participated by four students majored in international journalism and one in financial journalism. All students actively exchanged their works. They shared ideas and suggestions and learnt from each other. Students were inspired by their discussions on how to better deal with the data in the future journalism, how to make good use of data visualization in news reporting practice, and how to use data analysis to assist the news story telling.
