Sherwin CHUA, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism at Hong Kong Baptist University. A former journalist, his research and teaching focus on the intersection of digital journalism, media innovation, and emerging technologies. He is particularly interested in how social media platforms and AI technologies are transforming journalistic practices and business models.
His research has been published in journals such as Journalism Studies, Media and Communication, and Online Media and Global Communication. He serves on the editorial board of Digital Journalism and regularly presents at international academic conferences such as ICA and IAMCR. His interdisciplinary collaborations span strategic communication and organisational studies, with a focus on the sociotechnical shaping of journalism.
Sherwin also actively collaborates with industry associations including the Asian-American Journalists Association (AAJA-Asia), the International News Media Association (INMA), and the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA), serving as a judge for industry awards and contributing articles related to journalism innovation and newsroom transformation. His work has also been published by industry think tanks such as Harvard University’s Nieman Lab and Splice.
Before joining HKBU, he was a Lecturer at the Wee Kim Wee School of Communication and Information, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), where he taught courses in news writing, online journalism, and international reporting, and supervised final-year projects. Sherwin also co-developed and secured funding for the inaugural i-SEA Fellowship Programme, a regional initiative with Temasek Foundation to train Southeast Asian student content creators in ethical digital storytelling and information integrity.
Prior to entering academia, Sherwin was the editor of the Singapore edition of the international magazine Men’s Health at Singapore Press Holdings, and a journalist and sub-editor at Today, now a digital-only news outlet under MediaCorp, Singapore’s national broadcaster.
He earned his Ph.D. in Journalism, Media, and Communication at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, on a full doctoral scholarship; his Master’s in Mass Communication from NTU; and his Bachelor of Arts from the National University of Singapore.
